A bilingual, imaginative fantasy spiced with traditional Hispanic folktales of New Mexico.

ritten from the viewpoint of an adolescent named Tomás, this magical fantasy is rooted in Tomás's relationship with his wise and somewhat eccentric great aunt, tía Zulema. Her magical eyeglasses and her deck of playing cards serve as the dramatic and symbolic springboards for the action in the book.

At the center of the story is Tomas' journey towards maturity and self-realization, as dramatized by his search for his father who was killed in the Vietnam War when Tomas was three years old. As one adventure leads to the next, Tomas overcomes his fears until he finally comes face-to-face with the spirit of his father and confirms his own identity.

Tomas' journey continues in Garden of Stories.
